highlite was making the qtrs of the ASB Bank Classic in Auckland, New Zealand,
where she defeated top-twenty-ranked Barbara Schett. Allie lost in qualifying

with almost zero tournament experience, recently netted titles: Trevor

Zach made the finals of the Harper Ink while Trevor won the backdraw (Note:
Zachís father Eric attended ECTA camps in the mid-70s)...Another 10-under

Send-a-Kid-to-Camp
Requests for camp scholarships are increasing and, thanks in part to
the involvement of CBS Sports announcer Dick Enberg, the Send-a-Kid-to
Edís Camp has provided the necessary assistance. Last year more than
than $5000 was raised from a number of sources, making it possible to assist
15 children who otherwise wouldnít have been able to attend. If you can
help, send you tax-deedctible donation to J. Collins Memorial Tennis Scolarship
Fund/George Barnes Tennis Center/4490 W. Point Loma Blvd., San Diego, CA
92107.
Beach Volleys Fundraiser
The dates for the 5th Beach Volleys, Peninula Tennis Clubís annual
fund-raiser, havenít been set yet. Last year, The OB Wimbledon Garden Party,
raised over $5000 for the public tennis facility. The money was spent to
build a patio awning and to carpet/tile the clubhouse. 2001 plans include
a Saturday afternoon doubles mixer, hosted by PTC pro Gretchen Magers,
Ed Collins and Duncan Depew, followed by an auction/dinner/dance.
Ball Shed Update
To satisfy the curiosity of an odd few, update on the PTC Ball Shed:
PTC member Jerry Wood, after having donated a 6-foot anaconda skin, "submitted
for consideration," he said, to the shedís "curator," a handsomely framed
photo of Clark Gable. Despite Jerryís good intentions, the shedís most
recent grand benefactor is Barry Ponticello, who donated a chandelier.
(Now we need some electricity.)
Camps and Clinics
2001 will be the 32nd year of Ed Collins Tennis Camp. Most of the sessions
of this yearís camp will be held at Point Loma Nazarene University in San

held in 1970; from ë79 to ë96 the camp was held at University of San DiegoÖWeek-long
junior and adult resident minicamps are scheduled in June, July and August.
A 5-day Beach-and-Tennis day camp is scheduled in August.
