Bradshaw Makes All-American Allison Bradshaw made a big impression on Arizona State's women's tennis team this past spring. The freshman held down the #1 position and led the Sun Devils to an ITA #11 ranking. In the NCAA Regionals ASU defeated Northwestern, and in the round of 16 they lost to Cal...By being seeded in singles and doubles at the NCAAs, Allison earned All-America honors. She lost in the second round of both singles and doubles...In July Allie won a pre-qualifying event to earn a wild card into the TIG Classic at La Costa, where she lost to Germany's Anke Huber in the first round (2 and 4; served at 4-2).

Placek Makes Finals of CIF Torrey Pines High School junior Mike Placek duplicated his 1998 showing at this year's SDCIF Singles Championships by losing in the finals. After defeating the #2 seed in the semifinals, he lost to Point Loma High's Jason Pongsrikul 6-4, 6-4...In the doubles final, ECTA student Brett Feuerstein and partner A.J. James of La Jolla High defeated Lu and Sandoval of Rancho Bernardo High, 7-5, 6-2...In the CIF team championships, Torrey Pines High won the Division I title. Congratulations to Placek, Kevin Chen and Anthony Yau. In Division II, La Jolla High took home top honors, thanks in part to Feuerstein, Stacy Meronoff, Danny Furman and Justin Cohen. And the Division III title was taken home by USDHS, which included Jenner Smith.

Feuerstein Makes U-T's All-Academic Team La Jolla High's Mike Feuerstein was one of 11 student-athletes to earn the Union-Tribune's team captain's plaque for spring sports. The captain's plaque is symbolic of each sport's Player-of-the-Year on the All-Academic first team...After finishing as the runner-up as a junior, Feuerstein won the 1999 CIF Doubles Championship last June with partner A.J. James.

Beach Volleys Fund-raiser In May the third Beach Volleys auction/clinic/mixer and dinner/dance raised over $4000 for the Peninsula Tennis Club, the public facility at Robb Field. The money has/will be spent to build a patio awning and to carpet/tile the clubhouse.

Kolenovic Receives Carrothers Point Loma High's Denis Kolenovic received the prestigious Bob Carrothers Award, for outstanding sportsmanship, at this year's Harper Ink Tournament. Denis, now a senior, plans on attending college locally.

Send-a-Kid-to-Camp Thanks in part to the involvement of NBC Sports announcer Dick Enberg, the 1999 Send-a-Kid-to Ed's Camp was a success. More than $5000 was raised, making it possible to assist 15 children who otherwise wouldn't have been able to attend.

Camps and Clinics 1999 was the 30th year of Ed Collins Tennis Camp. This year's camp, along with the past two, was held at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego...Week-long junior and adult resident minicamps were held in June, July and August. A pre-sectional day camp was held in June and a 5-day Beach-and-Tennis day camp was held in August...Assisting Ed at camp again was longtime associate Larry Willens. Counselors/coaches included St. Augustine's Ovie Soto, Adam Schwartz (Bowdoin), Van Chu (SDSU), Andrew Evans (Dartmouth), Wolfgang Oswald (NIllinois), Anna Sciezka (PLNU) and Katalina Romero (Tijuana, BC).

Baja Tennis Trip The second Baja Tennis Trip is scheduled for September 24-26. Join Ed Collins, Gretchen Magers and Bill Hogben for a weekend of tennis, sightseeing and fun in Ensenada. Call for details.

Reunion 2000 Mark your calendars! USD Tennis/ECTC Reunion is scheduled for next August, date tba. Whoa!

For What It's Worth Par Svensson (USD '80) wife and kids vacationed in San Diego in July. Par and Rick Goldberg ('79) were mentioned in the U-T when USD's Zuzana Lenenarova won the NCAAs in May ("It had been 21 years since Par Svensson and Rick Goldberg won the Division II doubles title for USD...")...Scott Lipton ('80) left St. Mary's College, now teaches in the Social Science Dept at San Jose State. (He turns 40 on Sept. 11th.)...Corpus Christi's Dr. Mike Rodriguez ('82) brought his family to La Jolla during July; meanwhile Rocket won, or got to the finals&endash;&endash;I'm not sure which&endash;&endash;of the La Jolla Tournament 40s...Kevin Young ('84) met Toronto's Melanie Byford on a train in Belgrade in 1998; on July 10th they married, in Vancouver, Washington, where Kevin is the manager and director of the Vancouver Tennis and Racquetball Center...Jim McNamee ('87) is engaged!...Scott Patridge ('88) left Wilson Racquet Sports and now is a mortgage banker in Los Angeles...Curtis ('89) and Aida Dadian expect a family addition in February...Rob ('88) & Aida MacKay produced son #2, Chris, in March...Dave ('89) and Nicole Stewart are late entrants in the baby race (sometime after the first of the year), as are Chris ('88) and Corey Smith (date tba)...Coach Barry Ponticello ('90) gets married (to another attorney) on October 9th, at USD...Philippe Hofmann ('93) moved from New York to Las Vegas to La Jolla...Coach Mike ('89) and Anne Marie Reid expect a third in a few months. (They live in Cincinatti, a good place to visit, I might add, during the August ATP event.)...If you want to live on a golf course in San Diego, contact Coach Jim Kellogg ('90)...Fredrik Axsater ('94) passed the CFA (Certified Financial Analyst, for those who need to know) in August; now is working in Sydney, Aust. for Barclay's. He's scheduled to return to Cal for a brief time (and on November 4-6 he wants to go fishing in Ensenada with Huarte, Seward and Collins, and whoever else cares to join)...Financial planner Tim Truebenbach ('96) left Las Vegas, returned to San Diego...Scott (ECTC '93) and Debbie Cotton have settled in Dallas...
